Board and Train Program Information

No E-Collars, No Treats
♦♦♦♦♦♦
JCM's specializes in "Off Leash" training.
The dog is taught to follow the owner's commands with No leash and No collar of any kind.
To achieve this level of training takes roughly 12 weeks, sometime longer.

However, for owners who prefer their dog not be away from home for this extended period of time,
we now offer a 4 - 6 week *On Leash Only* Board & Train Program.
The same material, Behavioral Modification & Obedience Commands are taught in both programs.

JCM's Board and Train Program
(Time Frame: 1 or 3 Months)
....Because Training without Gimmicks & Shortcuts takes Time.

Certain criteria both dog and owner must meet before the dog can become a Board & Train student.

•  The dog must be no younger than four (4) months of age. There is no maximum age.
Exception: Giant breeds & aggressive puppies can be enrolled as young as three (3) months of age.

•  The dog should NOT weigh more than sixty five (65) pounds.
**Dogs weighing over 65 pounds will incur additional training fee (see payment on page 3.)**

•  No dog will be enrolled that is extremely aggressive or hyperactive.

• The owner must be willing to part with the dog for several weeks.

Group classes offered through JCM’s are extremely effective. The Board and Train Program will not short cut the amount of work you will need to put into your dog. However, your dog will be fully trained upon his return.

The Board and Train Program consists of the dog staying at the instructor’s facility for a period of, either **four (4) weeks, (on leash only training), or **twelve (12) weeks, (complete off leash training - no leash & no collar).

There he/she will acquire house manners, stay in our indoor / outdoor runs, and in our Luxury Suites. He/she will be trained under the format of the brochure/website. Before the end of the program, the dog will attend several group classes. While in the group setting the dog will be worked by either myself, one of the advanced students, or both. Once this portion of the training has been completed, the dog will be returned to the owner and the first follow up session will start.

**Follow ups are a series of one on one private lessons designed to teach the owner what the dog has already learned, and how to achieve the same results. The first 2 weeks are crucial in transferring the training and information.

The first session consists of a demonstration of all of the exercises the dog has mastered. The owner will then be shown how to start working with the dog. During this period, a great deal of time and effort is needed to learn and maintain the proper level of obedience expected from your dog.

It is the owners responsibility to schedule additional follow up sessions.
Initial sessions are generally scheduled every few days. Then every few weeks, or as needed
**Follow ups: private lessons and group classes, are included for the life of the dog at no additional charge.

To keep your dog in top working form, it is important that you work the dog everyday for several weeks. Then about 3 to 4 times a week to maintain training.

Your dog is guaranteed to perform the following commands, both on and off leash, upon his/her return:

Heel (the dog walks and turns with his neck even with the owners left leg on a loose leash. When the owner stops, the dog sits automatically).
Sit stay (the dog stays in a sitting position while the owner walks away, even out of sight. The dog stays until the owner returns and gives the release).
Down Stay (the dog stays in the down position while the owner walks away. He stays until the owner returns and gives the release).
Drop in Motion (this off leash emergency down is used if the dog is running off, or needs to stop immediately. The dog is taught to stop, drop, and then come back).
Stand for Exam (the dog stays in a standing position until the owner gives the release).
Figure 8 (teaches the dog to focus, change pace and direction, and ignore distractions).
Recall (the dog comes when called, then sits in front of the owner, every time).
Finish (the dog returns to heel position).
Heel from a standstill (on command. the dog positions himself at the owners left side without the owner moving).
Move it in (as the owner steps to the side, the dog adjusts himself to the owners body position).
Heel in reverse (as the owner walks backwards, the dog walks backwards as well. staying in heel position).

In home behavior problems, such as jumping, chewing, digging, play biting, housebreaking, charging the door, running out the door, running in the street, not coming when called, etc. are worked on but
not guaranteed upon the return of the dog. The owner is taught the correct way to cure any unwanted behaviors within the 2 week follow-up period.

**Since dogs take their cues from their immediate environment, and from the people around them, unwanted behaviors have to be addresses as they occur in real time. Therefore, the only way these, and other behavior problems can be cured, is to show the owner the correct way to address the issues in the dogs comfort zone, which is his home environment.

*It is recommended that the owner not visit the dog for the duration of the program, since this can cause emotional upset and distress for the dog. This will only prolong the program.

*If the owner wishes the dog returned before the program is completed, the dog will be promptly returned with no follow up, no guarantee, and no refund.

Additional charges:
Medication:
Flea and tick medicine must be provided. If an adequate amount is not provided at the time of drop off, JCM’s will provide Frontline Plus or Comfortus. We will then be reimbursed when the dog is returned. The cost of the product will be determined by the weight of the dog.

Grooming:
The dog will receive a bath, at no charge, before being returned at the end of the program.
Dogs with long, thick or high maintenance coats will have to sport a utility clip or puppy clip prior to training.
If the dog is of a type that requires professional grooming, the owner will be responsible for these charges. JCM's will be reimbursed upon the return of the dog.

Food:
We ask that you bring a bag of your dog's food at time of drop off. Since it is important to keep your pet on his current diet to avoid digestive upset we will continue to provide the same food at no additional charge throughout the remainder of the program.

We often get asked, why does our Board & Train program take so long.

Most training facilities offer a 10 day program. However, a short time period doesn't take into account several factors.

Initially dogs quickly learn what is being asked. After about 2 weeks, they act as if they've never heard the commands before. This is called a "plateau," and is a normal part of learning.

When Obedience training begins, information is stored in the dog's "short term" memory. As training continues, that information gets processed into "long term" memory. It is during this transition period, or "grey" phase that the dog becomes confused and no longer understands the correlation between the command and the action, ie. he will down when asked to sit, doesn't respond at all, etc.
The owner assumes the dog knows the command, but is just being stubborn. In reality, by making mistakes, the dog is sorting out, and fine tuning the exact meaning of each command.

Since dogs commonly experience 2 to 3 "plateaus" during training, a longer program ensures that each command and action is clearly understood.

Additionally, we specialize is "off leash." This means the dog performs the commands with No leash AND No collar....
and that takes TIME.
